Nevertheless, <strong>people wanted to participate in events marking the anniversary<\/strong> of independence regained after almost fifty years of occupation. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lithuanianstories.com\/en\/2021\/01\/14\/landsbergis-man-who-opposed-soviets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"It was 1990\">It was 1990<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1990<strong>Lithuania was the first Soviet Republic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lithuanianstories.com\/en\/2020\/01\/22\/vilnius-remember-events-january-1991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"to declare its independence\">to declare its independence<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A historic day for Lithuania and for all countries that were under USSR occupation<\/strong> or under control of the soviet regime. It was one of the first events leading to the collapse of the USSR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How happy Lithuanians were that day!<\/strong> Even kids. Maybe, they didn\u2019t understand what was exactly happening. However, they saw the happiness of their parents and relatives. <strong>Something important was changing their lives<\/strong>. Even if hard times were still coming, because <strong>the Red Army was still in the country<\/strong>. In January 1991, <strong>Mr. Gorba\u010d\u00ebv sent tanks to Vilnius<\/strong> to re-establish the Soviet Regime. We\u2019ve been going through difficult times. <strong>The war against Ukraine and the dictatorship in Belarus, the difficult situation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrt.lt\/en\/news-in-english\/19\/1931671\/baltic-ministers-warn-georgia-against-foreign-agent-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Sakartvelo\">Sakartvelo<\/a> and Moldova<\/strong>, remind us that freedom, independence, and democracy <strong>must be protected every day of our lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are Europe. <strong>We are stronger together<\/strong>.
