Journalist Le\u0161\u010diauskait\u0117: born in free Lithuania"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Our meeting with Fausta Marija Le\u0161\u010diauskait\u0117<\/strong> takes place in a hotel located in old town of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stikliai.com\/en\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Stikliai hotel <\/a><\/strong>in the heart of the old city, where there was the Jewish quarter in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fausta Marija is a young Lithuanian journalist born in 1993,<\/strong> three years later her country <strong>regained independence, reoccupied by the Soviets at the end of the Second World War<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WATCH THE VIDEO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Progetto \u017demaitis. ENG SUB\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xlLq1Wha_l8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Interview with the Lithuanian journalist Fausta Marija Le\u0161\u010diauskait\u0117<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Her testimony, in the context of our project, is very important.<\/strong> Because it is the testimony of those <strong>new generations who did not live under the Soviet occupation<\/strong> and do not directly know the brutality of the regime and the suffering that their parents, relatives and older acquaintances suffered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the meaning of resistance today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many angles from which one can look at the Lithuanian resistance, but <strong>the first thing that comes to mind is today&#8217;s youth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think many people think that this started in the 90s, <strong>based on their parents&#8217; stories when the Soviet Union collapsed,<\/strong> when there was so much pain, so much joy, so many, so many new emotions and experiences&#8230; But <strong>Lithuania has a much older history.<\/strong> The partisans are part of that history&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fausta heard about the resistance within her family<\/strong> since she was a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Her grandfather was a political prisoner<\/strong>. He was lucky not to be deported, but imprisonment undermined his health. He died prematurely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her studies, <strong>Fausta deepened her knowledge of the resistance and its commander \u017demaitis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026The subject of my <strong>thesis was the Au\u0161ra magazine<\/strong> and the people who were part of it. That&#8217;s when I first came across the story of Jonas \u017demaitis. Not just monuments or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LithuanianStoriesMarina\/videos\/294781216807575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ceremonies<\/a><\/strong>, but a greater insight into the personality of those who decided to fight for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe lives of those heroes of ours were truly fascinating in themselves.<\/strong> I&#8217;m not proposing to create a cheesy soap opera. I&#8217;m saying look for insights from their lives that might spark interest&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Showing the more human aspect of historical figures would help bring young people closer<\/strong> to the historical theme, to memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose were real people, they had their love stories, they loved their children and hoped to meet their grandchildren. Sometimes even <strong>small details of their lives can be interesting:<\/strong> what newspapers they read, what friendships they cultivated, who their enemies were&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>History can be boring for younger people,<\/strong> according to Fausta, and often today historians, despite being very knowledgeable, fail to engage them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cShowing the human side of Jonas \u017demaitis and other fighters.<\/strong> In that way perhaps we can better attract the attention of an eighth-grade child, a student and most of us&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u017demaitis project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The interview is part of <strong>the project \u201cJonas \u017demaitis, commander of fighting Lithuania\u201d,<\/strong> created by the <strong>\u201cBaltika-Baltijos Istorijos\u201d Association and LithuanianStories<\/strong> to remember the figure of the commander, <strong>with the precious support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lithuanianstories.com\/en\/2023\/09\/06\/jonas-zemaitis-the-commander-memories-of-his-niece-ausra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kotryna Buono and Ana Luisa Monse<\/a>, \u017demaitis\u2019 great-grandchildren.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is partially financed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kam.lt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Lithuania.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project involves <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lithuanianstories.com\/en\/2023\/10\/13\/meaning-and-value-of-lithuanian-resistance-interview-with-landsbergis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a series of video interviews<\/a><\/strong> with figures from civil society in today Lithuania: <strong>historians, representatives of institutions, ordinary citizens,<\/strong> people who are interested in and pass on <strong>the memory of the partisan resistance against the Soviet occupation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WATCH THE VIDEO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Progetto \u017demaitis.
